CarComplaints.com Notes: The Cobalt was introduced to replace two of Chevy’s smaller cars, the Cavalier and Prizm. But the compact’s fresh start that Chevy was hoping for was riddled with issues, most notably widespread power steering failure.

The power steering failed so often that GM was forced to issue a recall in March, 2010. Great, but what about other problems like the key getting stuck in the ignition or all the other electrical demons this car possesses?

And, oh yes — then there’s the terribly dangerous issue where the Cobalt randomly shuts off while driving. As it turns out, that problem is related to GM’s massive 2014 recall for a dangerous ignition switch defect. A recall that eventually ballooned to 2.6 million vehicles in one of the automotive industry’s biggest scandals.

My car started having problems with the drivers door lock not unlocking from the inside out outside. The lock appears to unlock, but the door will not open. The key fob, inside door switch and key don't unlock the door. I called Chevrolet and they said they never heard complaints on this, despite the internet being full of complaints and told me to take it to a dealer. I filed a complaint online with National Highway Traffic Safety. This is a serious safety issue and the car needs to be recalled. This is the worst car I ever bought. I bought this car new and have spent a great deal of time with warranty work and recalls.

So in beginning of May, we come to realize that they key would not work in the driver side keyhole. We had to get in on passenger side and to unlock it. Then came beginning of July. Lock the door, try to go pull on the lock, it won't come up. Yeah, so now it is all kinds of messed up and it is not like we can get the panel off the door to see what the problem is. We are going next friday to see what can be done and probably going to cost us bookuh. IF anyone knows how or why or how to fix this, opinions and suggestion are greatly appreciated. I would hope that we can fix the problem ourselves.

I cannot get my driver side door to open, one day it was both drivers side and passenger side. I have to get in and out of the passenger side. What started happening first was I would get out and the latch would latch back down so I couldn’t close my door so I would have to lock and unlock my door multiple times with the remote until the latch goes up, once I do that and close the door it will then not open back up, like the latch is stuck down and will not come back up even though the door is ‘unlocked’… I have tried to lock and unlock it manually I’ve tried to lock and unlock it with my remote I’ve even tried rocking it thinking it probably just wasn’t in gear (it’s an automatic) but still no luck… I have to STILL get in and out of my cobalt through the passenger side due to the driver’s side latch not unlatching… Has anyone else had this problem or am I the only one? Also, what do you think it could be? I do not have a warranty on my car since it’s a 2005 obviously… It has locked me completely out at one point and I do not want to get to the point of it locking me in my car and me having to crawl through my window like Ace Ventura coming out of a mechanical rhino’s a$$. This is so FRUSTRATING since I have not seen ANY resolution on the internet on how to fix this without actually taking it to a dealership so they can ‘diagnose’ it which will be $50-55 its self. I have had more problems with this car than my parents have had with their 2002 Chevy Avalanche which has only had ONE problem the whole time they have owned it… My EPS System went out (had to replace that) my key kept sticking in my ignition (had to replace the shifter) and NOW my door locks are being all sorts of crazy… I have to live my luck with my car doors on hoping it will not lock me out even though the door locks are showing that its unlocked but the latches are not coming up… Anyone have an answer for that???

My 2005 Chevy Cobalt Coupe was nothing but trouble since the day I bought it. This particular issue was that the door lock on the driver's side door got stuck. Locking me inside of the 2-door car. I had to climb across the front seat to get out and in. Not easy at all! Took the car to the dealership and they said that this was a common problem. (But yet, no recall, big surprise!). They replaced the door lock and it was fine from then until I got rid of the car.
