CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2008 Honda Accord has several serious defects: poor brakes, excessive oil consumption, & uncomfortable seats.

BRAKES: There was a class action lawsuit against Honda in 2010 for premature & excessive brake wear. See our page on Honda's brake problems for more info.

OIL CONSUMPTION: Honda issued a TSB about this in late 2011, claiming it could be fixed through a software update to the VCM (variable cylinder management). There are class action lawsuits pending. See our page about the Accord oil consumption.

UNCOMFORTABLE SEATS: Owners have consistently reported uncomfortable seats with the entire 8th generation (2008-2012) of Honda Accords. Complaints range from back pain to leg circulation problems due to bad lumbar support, cushioning, & seat angle. Complaints aren't limited to only a certain body type -- the seat comfort problems are from a wide spectrum of owner height & weight. The common theme we hear is "we never noticed this during the test drive." Unfortunately for unwary buyers, the seat pain is noticeable after 15-20 minutes.

So yes, I thought I was the only one that had this problem. When I first heard the problem I thought for a while that man, the car next to me need to get his/her brakes checked. Well, come to find out it was really me who had the problem. I thought to myself, this cannot be right, I only had the car for 2 years. Anyways, I did not take my car to the dealership yet but once I do I will let you guys know what happened..

I have had my car for a little over a year now and I've already had to replace the front and back brakes twice. This is ridiculous! I've never had this problem with any of my other cars and this is becoming a problem. Honda keeps saying its just normal ware and tare, but it cant be! I shouldn't have to be replacing brakes ever 6 or 7 months. Honda should do something about this problem immediately because i am seriously thinking trading for something else. I am not happy with Honda and i will take my business somewhere else!

I've got my brand new Accord 2008 in August 2008. The brakes started squeaking in November. I went to the dealer 4 times. Now is August 2009 and these brakes are the same. Dealer replaced my front and rear rotors, replaced both front brake calipers.... Still squeaks! Well, they informed me that it is nothing wrong with the brakes and it works fine. However, it does squeak only on front passenger side wheel. Yet, I don't have any problems with braking it is still sounds wrong that front passenger side brakes would squeak in brand new vehicle. On this web page I've found that many other Honda Accord owners have the same problem... Well, will go to the Honda dealer again and check if there any bulletin and if they will fix it.

Update from Aug 20, 2009: Well, I went to another Honda dealer today. They've told me that Honda is aware of the squeaking brake problem and it seems like they are going to release some kind of bulletin soon. I've been told that it is safe to drive my Accord till then. Hope so! On the top of that I've been told that additionally Honda is going to release the bulletin for premature wear of rear brakes. What is funny is that if you have 15000 miles or more... Honda wouldn't do your brakes as a goodwill repair and it costs $365.

Update from Dec 5, 2009: Had two another trips to Honda dealers. The brakes are still squeaking, however I've been assured that dealer have checked the brakes and everything works fine. On the top of that I've been told that rear brakes have to be replaced (less than 18000 miles!!!!!). I am positive that my next car is not Honda.

Update from Dec 29, 2009: Here is the link for the service bulletin fro front brakes http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/A09-096.PDF It seems like my dealer didn't know about it or might be didn't want to know... Dealer said that Honda would pay 50% for rear brakes replacement. Well, I am going to bring it to the arbitration and if Honda wouldn't do refund I will go to the court. I think that we should find the attorney for a class action. Paying for rear brakes every 16000-17000 miles doesn't seem right. Oh! My remote key stopped working and I've got new battery, which didn't affect the problem. Today I was told by the dealer that Honda has a service bulletin for remote key too. So, dealer replaced the battery in remote for free and it seems like remote is working now... I just had a brand new battery a week ago and it didn't do any good. Well, let's call it a mystery.

I have a 2008 Accord with brakes that will not stop squeaking.

The first time I took it in, it was only a three months old. The dealer told me that it was due to rust on the rotors, which probably occurred while it sat on the docks waiting to be shipped. They replaced all front & back rotors & pads under warranty.

This fix lasted several months. When they started squeaking again, I was told it had nothing to do with the first issue. This time, it was a problem with the pads. Honda is aware that there is an issue with the pads wearing out prematurely and therefore will only charge me $75 to fix. I pitched a fit because I believe it is outrageous to charge me for an issue you acknowledge is a design flaw and for a part that is still under warranty. I get them down to $35 and decide I have wasted enough of my Saturday with these yahoos and paid them.

Four days later, brakes are squeaking again. Back I go. This time they tell they are going to replace the rotors again under warranty. However, when they give me my car back, they tell me that the brakes are showing evidence of excessive heat. I am concerned. Why are my brakes over heating. Guess what? My fault. I am using my brakes excessively. Therefore they decided not to replace my rotors as they originally said they would, they just resurfaced them. And this is the last time Honda will honor their warranty because my "blue" brakes prove that I am braking too much. They will not tell me how many times a day I am allowed to use my brakes, before Honda abandons it's warranty, but whatever that number is, I have exceeded it. I laughed at him and drove away.

Joke is on me though, because guess where my car is just 6 days later? That's right, at the dealer with squeaky brakes. I will let you know what they say this time.

This is not normal for my new Honda Accord 2008 with only 22,000 miles on it. Honda service man asked me to replace it with the cost of $170. Looks like I have to pay this amount of money every year. It's not fair. I request Honda to find solution for this problem.

During a routine service visit at 15,000 miles it was discovered that my rear brake pads needed to be replaced. The dealership tech said "we did you a favor and replaced them at no cost to you." Ever since then the breaks have squeaked to the point of distraction. I have complained to the dealership and have been told that Honda is working on a solution. In the meantime if I replace my brakes Honda can't guarantee that they won't squeak and replacement will be at my own cost. Also, the final solution if and when it comes will be at the customer's expense. This week I contacted the service manager at the dealership to see if a "fix" is in yet and was told that it might not be the rear brake pads after-all and that the problem might have resulted from my driving habits. On that note I called Honda's 800 number to lodge a complaint. They advised that my dealership was not a company owned store but rather a privately owned dealership and as such they have very little influence over the store, however, my Honda Corp contact admitted that Honda was aware of the problem and were working on a solution. This is the third Honda I've owned and it will be the last one. There are so many great cars out there now.

I'm having the same complaint other Honda Accord owners are having. The brake replacement cost - $234.20. I was informed that it was not covered under warranty, and my question was WHY are the rear brakes going out on a vehicle with just over 21,000 of highway driving. Although I have the extended maintenace warranty, it was not covered. My car was just in for regular maintenance service 6/23/09 to include tire rotation. I suppose you don't look at the brakes when you have all tires off of the vehicle just as the norm of maintenance. IOn the sheet that accompanied the bill - under "brake condition" front brakes 12mms(left) 12mms(right front); 0mms(left rear and 1mms(right rear. This is absolutely horrible that the Honda of Bowie Service repairman did not mention a brake problem. This is my first Honda, and I do not believe I'll every purchase another, and will advise my friend to NOT do the same. If there is a CLASS ACTION SUIT, add me to the list.

Update from Oct 12, 2009: I received a call from "Jason" at the NHTSA. Jason indicated there may be a recall. He was not sure if and when, however, if American Honda does recall, I should receive a refund.

After finding this site and hearing all these complaints. I am glad to know that other people are having the same problem with their brakes.. I have replaced the brake pads twice since I had the car. Front and back. This car just eats brakes. I have always taken the car back to the dealer to be fixed. I was glad to know that I found someone now that can fix them instead the dealer charging a arm and leg. As for as the car it self its a great car. As for as brakes. Very BAD rating and will not get them fixed at the dealer again.

My '08 Accord started squeaking this past February at less then 20K miles. Lasted for couple months and I had a local mechanic check the breaks - he found no issues, said they were brand new. Now there is the most awful grinding noise, AND intermittent squealing when i drive. I'm taking it to my mechanic tomorrow, since after reading the other complaints, i'm pretty sure Honda won't cover rear break replacement so there's no point driving an hour to spend more. And that's what i suspect is going on. I am pretty sure my guy didn't think to look at the rear brakes, since the car is brand new. I'm filing a complaint with Honda Corporate, with the Federal Trade Commission, (I'm pretty sure folks - this could fall under the Federal Lemon Law), the Better Business Bureau, and the Energy and Commerce Committee in Washington (which has jurisdiction over the Automobile Industry, the FTC, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.) and my local congressman, I'm fairly sure if enough pressure is applied to Honda - especially from our Congressional Members we'll see a fix. I'm happy to join a class action if that's what it takes.

Good Luck!

We bought a brand new 2008 Accord July of 2008...things were great until around November of 2008. We started hearing a squeal, called the dealer and took it in. They could not do anything or drive it because it was raining. Brought it home. Still squealing. Made another appt May of 2009, the technician finally heard the noise, said they could not fix it as Honda is working on new pads for the 2008 Accords. Many have had the same problems. They sent us home with the car and said there was nothing they could do until Honda comes up with new pads to install. In the mean time, the squealing is getting MUCH WORSE. As long as we keep the windows rolled up and radio or air conditioning running...we hear nothing. I called the dealer again today complaining that the noise was worse and very very annoying. I was told by the service tech they could do nothing until Honda comes up with new pads. Hello.....I am driving a new Honda and cannot seem to get it fixed.

I asked the tech today if they could at least put a new brake system on...he told me "no, that would make the problem worse, and there is nothing we can do until Honda contacts you". Sorry....not stopping there. For what you pay for a new vehicle, we should not have to put up with this crap. We have driven Honda for many years, never had problems...but this really upsets me.

I am not going to let this slide....something has to be done.

I've been having this annoying problems with my brakes. It started around 9k miles that the rear brakes makes a loud squeaky noise. So i took it to the dealer. The service dept. took a look at it and said all it was is brake dust will clean it off and the problem will be solve. Yeah sure when i was driving home from the dealer everything seem ok until i step on my brake pedal to brake their it was that squeaky noise again. I didn't have a chance to bring it back to the dealer because of my busy schedule with work until my next service. Yes i manage to deal with that bullshit until my next service. I went back for the second time. I explain again to the dealer about my brake issue. They said they will take a look at it. So i waited until one of the service rep. came up to me and said that i would have to replace the rear brakes. I was very very upset the vehicle mileage at this time only had about 14k miles. and the cost would be around $170 bucks. From all of the vehicle i owned i have never had this brake problems. All my other vehicles only have to change my brakes every 50K-60K miles. What the hell!! im pissed off. I like this car a lot and all but the damn brakes are going to drive me into the wall. So i got it replace for a hefty price just to change the pads. Yes i did pay around $170 dollars to get it fix because i cant see myself driving into the wall. But get this after the pads were replace the problems was still there.

My first foreign car in my 44 years of life. 33,000 almost all highway miles and the brakes are bad? You have got to be kidding me! I have a Ford Focus with 75,000+ and it has the original brakes still in great condition. Since I haven't had any previous problems with this Accord, I was looking at a Civic to replace my Focus in 6 months. When I found out that the squeaking noise on my still-under-warranty Accord could not be fixed, I was so mad that I left the dealer. Not only will I not have the work done at the Honda dealer, I won't be buying that shiny new Civic in 6 months. Too many other good choices out there. Hang in there GM and Ford... While driving my 2008 Honda accord ex, I heard a loud squeaking sound and I took the car to the dealership where they diagnosed the problem as the rear brakes has less than 5% left. That's Bullz$itz! Who has ever heard of back brakes going out on a car that is 1 year old and only has 27,000 miles. I called the Corporate office of Honda who politely told me that I was the only person who had this problem. That is a bold face lie. I have a 2008 Honda Accord with 32,000 miles and I just had my breaks replaced, out of pocket! This is a shame and the engineers know it's their mistake and don't want to fix the problem. I have a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier with 300,000 miles and didn't have the brakes done until 80,000 miles, just to show that I wasn't driving my car rough and not taking care of my cars. I thought it would be a good idea to buy a Honda. Think again! My next car will be a Toyota or Nissan. Besides squeaky breaks, It wear breaks fast. I had to replace rear breaks after 34K. I think these are related problems but HONDA does not believe so. The squeeking has not stopped even after changing the rear breaks. The front bearks on the car are still at 85%. I had 2005 accord before, no problems and this was the reason I bought another. But this 2008 accord is giving so many problems. The customer service in Honda Canada said that brakes is a known problem & HONDA engineers are looking into it. I have not heard from them since. Most recently when I called Honda Canada, the rep mentioned that it was my bad luck as I am having so many problems with this car. It is ironic that a company like Honda is blaming bad luck instead of bad quality control & engineering. I will never buy accord again & will advise against buying it.
