Ratings on over 1,000 new & used models going back 5 years, from the Center from Auto Safety. Learn more about The Car Book 2018 here. Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

problem #2

Jun 142014

Altima SL 3.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 8,894 miles

Wind noise and rattle, even when completely closed, is annoying. Have shield closed to muffle the noise from the sunroof. Was told, "sunroofs are noisy" end of conversation . Funny, I have a friend with a 2011 Ford Fusion and that sunroof is undetectable.

problem #1

Aug 202014

Altima 3.5 SL V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

Noticed a rattling noise coming from ceiling, when sunroof was open. The bolts holding the sunroof frame, they told me, had come loose and they had to replace them, took all day at shop as they had to disassemble the entire roof.
