While on a 70mph highway, my vehicle started sputtering and would not retain speed. I kept my foot on the gas, and it was losing speed at an alarming rate. I was now going 35 on a 70mph road. I pulled to the berm, with my hazards on, and tried to regain normal highway speeds. Found a safe spot to park, had to have it towed (usaa insurance) to a mechanic. Mechanic could not register code, he towed it to another mechanic. Cvt transmission went. Known problem with Altima's. Nissan knows of the problem. Had to have it towed to my home state ($500, no receipt, as it is not here yet). Need to take it to an authorized Nissan dealer and pay for it out of pocket(37-3900, no receipt, can not afford it). Had to rent a car to get home ($300, my sister rented it). I had children in the car, ready for vacation, and they were scared we were going to get into an accident because of the cvt transmission issues. So far, I am out of pocket $571.62, not to mention the almost 4 thousand dollars I am facing.

Transmission will go back and forth between dying and reviving up. Seems to be a very common problem, but no recalls. Per Nissan now, the transmission is dead and needs to be replaced.

problem #138

Jul 132019

Altima

  • 74,000 miles
Acceleration issues. Sporadically the car will do nothing when we step on the accelerator. It is dangerous because it happens randomly and we essentially have zero power to move. After holding the accelerator down for a number of seconds the car will then abnormally start to accelerate and rev up on rpms but will not accelerate as normal. It's as if the transmission is thoroughly confused. I continued to drive the car and it could never get over 60 mph regardless of how far I stepped on the accelerator. I have video of the behavior. The issue continues at random times and we feel incredibly unsafe when we are in traffic because the car will idle forward but do nothing even when accerator is depressed. I took it to the dealer with video of the vehicles crazy behavior; they have told me that the computer says nothing is wrong with it. They tell me to continue to drive until it gets worse. This is not acceptable because we are at risk of an accident when you try to accelerate but the car does nothing but idle forward; it catches us off guard and we are concerned about idling into on coming traffic when making turns. I have contacted Nissan who said they have no interest in watching the video and that the computer indicates nothing wrong with my car. We are incredibly worried about driving this car and feel Nissan is covering up an issue. It was admitted to me by the dealer that this is a common problem with many of their cvts; it is evident in consumer information on the internet as well. I get the impression Nissan has no interest in the safety of the community; starting with the fact that neither the dealer nor Consumer Affairs has interest in watching the videos showing the very serious issue. I can provide video to NHTSA upon request. Thank you.

Car shudders, idles up and down, loses power while driving. When accelerating, the tachometer will raise to 4500-5000 rpms with no real power supplied to the car, and will only slowly accelerate(slipping?) tachometer bounces up and down within 100rpm range while coasting. My cvt is about to fail.

The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Altima. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a rumbling noise and there was a strong vibration coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle surged and the gears failed to properly change over, when needed. In addition, the traction control indicator kept illuminating. Temecula Nissan (41895 motor car pkwy, temecula, ca 92591, 951-972-8400) was unable to diagnose the failure several times and kept indicating that the traction control indicator caused the system to assume to brake and also caused a power train malfunction. The manufacturer later sent a technician to provide further testing. Pedder Nissan (200 carriage cir, hemet, ca 92545, (951) 225-4831) was also contacted and indicated to take the vehicle back to the dealer that performed the repairs. The manufacturer provided no solution other than a settlement with no remedy for a permanent repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was not available.

The vehicle was in motion when the RPM dial started to move up and down and the car started to slip gears. The car was unable to go into top gear, struggled to go up hills, began shifting gears erratically, and could not acelerate past 40 miles per hour. The car felt very hurky jerky and the ride was the oppposite of smooth. This persisted for over several miles. I got the car to the Nissan dealership the next day. According to a class action lawsuit I am involved in that Nissan lost, on June 9, 2019, Nissan was supposed to fix this issue, but they are refusing to make amends for the issue with the transmission on my car. The case is christopher gann et al. V. Nissan North America, case number 3:18-cv-00966, in the U.S. district court for the middle district of Tennessee. My car is at the rockland Nissan dealership right now at 845 -358-6700 and they want us to pay for them to diagnose the car because the car is out of warranty even though according to the legal deal they made they are supposed to extend our warranty 24 months or 24,000 miles and pay for any servicing of our transmission. Don't have to really say much because it's pretty much all over the internet but that transmission is a piece of junk!! it was slipping repeatedly from around 50,000-104,000 when I got rid of it. It would also stall out (yes on a cvt) from time to time in stop and go traffic. It got to a point that I was scared I was going to be stuck with a car with no resale valve (because of the transmission) and owe a $14,000 payoff balance with the bank. So I traded it in and got a F-150.I believe all jatco transmissions should go under an investigation because this is not safe for american roads.

Vehicle shudders when coming to a stop, then shuts down. On occasion will not re engage into gear without shutting down and then must be towed( twice has died in the middle lane of a road, needing to be towed). Generally occurs when slowing down but has also happened when trying to accelerate. Nissan dealership claims there are no known issues with these transmissions and are unable to replicate issue.

The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Altima. While driving 70 mph, the transmission downshifted, the engine revved, and the vehicle decelerated. The engine lost power when the vehicle approached a stop sign. In addition, the steering wheel vibrated. The contact was able to gain control of the vehicle after it was turned off and restarted. Also, the "M6" message appeared on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic to be diagnosed, but no failure codes appeared. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 74,000.

  • 71,000 miles
When I was driving my car started grinding as if the engine wanted to shut down or the transmission I was getting ready to get on the freeway and I could barely move it was in gear it wouldn't do it in low gear either I will come to a stop light or stop sign because I was trying to make it home which was 5 miles away, and it would just barely inch out sometimes it won't even start for about 45 seconds to a minute to go into drive and the rpms at 25 miles an hour would hit up to five RPM's the whole time driving, I take really good care of my car in for this to happen to my transmission is not ok and then I started looking up that this is common in my car so why haven't you done any recalls? it all starts at 70,000 miles but there is no recalls for that because you only have your warranty is up to 60,000 miles which is a good thing because you know that the transmissions going to go out after 60,000 miles, anyway I barely got my car back to my home and I have a mechanic look at it and it's going to cost me almost $4500 to get my transmission fixed, and I still owe 16,000 on it. I don't know what's going on with your Nissan ultima's but looking up online mine is not the first one that this is happened to so therefore since I can't drive a car because I can't afford to pay all that money, and then I also am out of work because I need a car to drive back-and-forth, I am going to find an attorney that will do a class action lawsuit against you guys for the vehicles doing this! what is happening is not ok, and should never happen but with everything I looked up online there are hundreds of Nissan Altima's 2014's around 70,000 miles that the transmission is going out this is a problem and it needs to be addressed!

The contact owns a 2014 Nissan Altima. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle hesitated and the battery warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle failed to accelerate as the accelerator pedal was depressed. The vehicle was towed to banister Nissan of Norfolk (1250 N military hwy, Norfolk, va 23502) where it was diagnosed that the cvt failed. The contact was informed that the transmission needed replacement and the cvt needed reprogramming. The Nissan manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that the extended warranty expired in December of 2018; however, there was an open service campaign number: PC490 (cvt reprogram). The contact stated that she had not received notification of the open service campaign. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 97,000.
