CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Cobalt continued to carry the torch first lit by the 2005 model year. To be clear, that torch is burning bright with widespread power steering issues, electrical curiosities and a dangerous ignition switch defect which led to a massive recall by GM. This isn’t a great torch to carry.

The 2006 added it’s own special flare with gas leaks due to cracks in the “return portion of the modular reservoir assembly.” A recall of 2006 Cobalts was issued to fix the problem, but only to vehicles sold in or current registered in Arizona and Nevada, leaving other owners to pay for repairs themselves.

Between this car stalling while driving, giving owners fits with power steering failure and having it be a potential tinderbox because of gas leaks, we felt we had no other option than to award it our “Avoid Like the Plague” badge.

Cobalt 2LT 2.2L 4-cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 13,000 miles

I bought my Cobalt used at a local Carmax. It's only a 2006 so it's not very old and it had 13k miles. Every time I turn on my radio system when the weather is over 70 degrees the display starts flashing. At first I noticed this problem when I would push the right gauge button to activate my sub-woofer. A few weeks later I learned that my cruise control wouldn't work either (I'm lucky now if I can get it to work). On top of that my paint is chipping on the interior trim on the doors and the exterior trim on the doors is fading. My guess is some cheap ass paint got put on and no protect-ant. Those are hopefully the only things that are wrong in my car. I'll soon be taking this crap to the dealership to bitch them out about their half-ass jobs they do with their vehicles. Don't get me wrong though, I love my car- since it is my first. I'm a huge car fanatic and I detail my car myself at least every 2-3 weeks. So I know this isn't my fault. POS. Thanks for hearing me complain! :)
