We bought a new 2007 Cobalt and now at 43,000 miles only 7,000 miles past warranty the power steering goes out you can shut car off and restart and it fixes the problem for a short period of time but this is a ongoing issue with other Cobalts we have contacted GM and they are unwilling to fix it so that's why we are here.
Power steering on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt goes out constantly. Its on when you first start the car, but then goes off after a mile or so of driving. Power steering motor was changed twice, and it worked for about 2 weeks, then went right back to the old way.
When making a U-turn the steering turns by itself to the steering lock about 1/2 turn before hitting the stop. It happens both directions but not when doing this in reverse gear. It becomes hard to correct until the steering wheel is turned about 1 turn back towards center. It almost feels like the wheels are going past center and that is why it is hard to correct. It is in the dealer for this problem.
It was running smooth until about roughly a year then just a few weeks ago the power steering went out and the warning lights came on. It was taken back to the dealer they didn't find anything wrong with it and said nothing can be done until its recalled. You can't steer it, you need to restart your car and hope it goes away. It seems like when the engine or the car is warm it goes out. I am a college student who has to commute from home by going on highways and busy streets this isn't safe! parents buy these cars for their teenagers. Everyone who own this car has this issue and waiting for an answer. Many lives are being put at risk because of this problem. Please don't wait until an accident happens and live(s) are taken away because you have to wait for enough people to complain. Please recall it and get it solved. Before something serious happens to someone(s). Please help everyone!

While picking up my friend's children from school, I heard a few beeps and noticed power steering on my dash to which then my steering became stiff. It resets at start but has become more frequent, almost constant. I did an online search and it seems that every single Cobalt has this problem at some point in its lifetime and GM has not cared to fix it or pay for it to be fixed (hopefully this has changed with new owners). So until I can find a cheap way to fix it I am driving a death trap.

Power steering goes out without warning. I went to the Chevy dealer who acknowledged it is an electronic assist and their have been some problems. It is not covered under the extended warranty. Their is no notice prior to the failure and no set of duplicating conditions which initiate the problem. This would appear to be Chevrolet design flaw. I found out that this is a major problem with the Cobalt series of vehicles and saw many internet related sites one of which directed me here. I believe Chevy is aware of the problem and will not remedy the situation until prompted by a major lawsuit from a death or the intervention of the government. At the cost for a replacement it will be a buying decision for most consumers as the problem continues to be intermittent.

The power steering fails on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalts. Mine has failed and from my research this is not an isolated incident. There are thousands of these dangerous autos on the road. Chevrolet knows about this and needs to be held accountable.
My son's car is a 2007 Chevy Cobalt. He has a problem with the power steering. It goes out without any warning. It happened last week for the first time and today it went out 4 times just on his way home from work. He is not able to drive the car to the dealer ship and had to get it towed. I have checked on different websites and have found out that there are a lot of people with the same problem.
The power steering fails every several minutes under normal driving conditions. After restarting the vehicle, the problem disappears for less than 5 minutes. This sudden and unexpected failure makes driving extremely difficult and dangerous. As an infrequent driver (less than 3,000 / miles per year) I have not taken the steps necessary to remedy this issue myself...public transportation is safer and widely available.

While driving, suddenly the power steering stops working, a message "power steering" appears and it's making hard to drive. The only thing that makes it work again is stopping the car and starting the engine again. This happened twice three days ago and now its doing it up to six times per day.
