CarComplaints.com Notes: You should probably steer clear of the 2012 Focus. Otherwise, you might not be able to steer at all.

The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.

And while you wait for your steering to disappear, you'll be greeted with a transmission that shudders, vibrates or won't shift at all.

The foil trim on my steering wheel, just above the audio control button, is peeling. It started as a sharp edge that would catch my finger, but now it is peeling off. I could no find a cost effective way to replace/fix this problem.

Similar to other users, the chrome has come off in exactly the same place. Outside of the warranty, Ford UK only cover the interior for 1 year, and it is not covered anyway by the extended warranty. Ford quoted me £450 to repair this - basically a new airbag I guess. Seriously unhappy and disappointed with Ford!

Focus SFE 2.4L I4 Gdi

  • Automatic transmission

Metallic foil trim on top right edge of vinyl airbag cover on steering wheel is peeling back from the edge and leaving a sharp edge in a spot where the hand or fingers may rub it resulting in a cut.

Primarily cosmetic but in a conspicuous spot. No excuse for a manufacturer to build this and then not offer a repair.

Like many others, the silver is peeling from my steering wheel as well. Noticed it about 3 years after having the car. So ugly.

Update from Jul 31, 2016: This is just getting uglier and uglier!

Getting out of my car this morning I felt something catch on my finger. Went to reach up and open the garage and had blood running down my hand. My finger was sliced open from the peeling chrome on my steering wheel. I went down to the dealership immediately because we just bought this car two months ago. The dealership repair gentlemen was super nice - looked at it right away and apologized several times. He is ordering a part and will replace it once the part is in. I will just have to be careful driving. LOVE my car but wish there was another option besides just replacing the chrome. I have a fear it'll happen again when it is no longer under warranty.

Focus SE 2.0L

For a brand new car i wouldn't expect this to happen, maybe on a 10yr+ old car. The car was just about 2yrs old and this problem started. Luckily my wife nor myself was cut by the aluminum peeling. Good thing is that this IS covered under warranty so if you have this problem ensure your dealer replaces it and don't take no for an answer. The piece requires the entire front end to include the airbag to be switched out as it's a complete single unit.

Again for a new car, come on Ford! I noticed when I went to put my hand there to just cruise down the highway. I almost sliced my hand, luckily I noticed it before I did though. I am going to take pictures of it before I trim it off or don on gloves to remove it all before I get hurt.

chrome plating on steering wheel peeling off

The RH side caught my thumb when I reached for the volume control. It sliced it open and a piece of the chome was stuck in the cut. I checked the other side and it is also peeling/lifting and very sharp.

Several small items have all come up at the same time... Have heard from other owners with the same problem at around the same mileage. The flaking chrome is on the steering wheel where the controls are for the audio and vehicle information module. Wife refuses to drive the car after lodging a piece of chrome into her finger...
