CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2006 Nissan Altima has a trend of engine & transmission problems.

Excessive oil consumption is the main problem reported by owners. Nissan did a recall back in 2006 for oil consumption due to bad piston rings, but many owners report to us that the recall didn't fix the problem. The dealer only had to check the oil consumption rate. Typically 1 qt per 1,000 miles is "acceptable" per OEM standards ... that's a lot of oil!

The 2006 Altima also has a defect trend of CVT transmission failure showing up around the 100,000 mile mark.

It's an expensive repair at over $2,000 average repair cost. For more information see Nissan Altima CVT defect info on NissanProblems.com.

Altima S 2.5L

When I'm driving down the road at any given time the entire vehicle jerks. Last thing I need is this vehicle to break down on me with myself and 2 young children in the car. I'm seeing a lot of complaints about the same thing. There should be some type of recall on Nissans part about this.

Altima

My problems began with the car not wanting to go in reverse. It would finally pop and go into reverse and drove fine. Then a year or so later the car would rev up high when driving and then "kick" and finally would go into gear. All this kicking broke my motor mounts and had to have ALL them replaced and that was about $600. Then in Sept 2014, my car began to not shift until after it "warmed up". By March 2015 the car would no longer go over 20 miles per hour. The transmission is gone. The car is an 06 with 138000 miles on it. Seems like a major problem for a car like this.

I had an 1999 Nissan Altima I loved never a problem. This 2006 Nissan Altima since I took off the lot has been a nightmare. Never wants to start. Always putting in oil. Always jerking, shuts off when driving. Crankshaft sensor problem. Transmission just blew.

I was told by a few mechanics they are called special edition for a reason. Not a lot were made because of all the problems and there non stop on the shop. I'm so disappointed I called Nissan and a they had to say was sorry to hear that. Well I will never ever buy another Nissan and I've always told me how great Nissan was, well that has ended. I will be sharing and posting this everywhere.

Apparently there is a active lawsuit against them with a transmission a recall on the crank shaft sensor, just had replaced. All Nissan could say was it wasn't my vin with the sensor. I stated that's funny considering its the same thing happening. Horrible. I still owe $9000 on this car . Worst car. Never buy a Nissan period. After the customer service and the reviews I feel bad I ever recommended this. Never again.

the nissan will jump from 2000 rpm to around 6000 rpm without shifting, it throws you back and fourth in the car. it does not shift and it will do this even if you give it just a little bit of gas to get up a hill. it is outragous the way the vechile is reacting, it could easlily cause a serious acccident or death if you tried pulling on the highway because the car does not accelerate, its like nothings catching, and this is an automatic transmission.

Altima SE V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,000 miles

Nissan quoted me $5,000 + to replace my transmission...(took it to my mechanic for transmission service but it kept slipping.) I called Nissan only to have them tell me that my vin number was not included in the campaign even though it is doing the exact same thing as other Nissan Altimas. There is a class action lawsuit filed but who knows how long that will take. I need my car and cannot afford to pay them 5 thousand to fix a problem they knew existed when they sold me the car! Up to this point I most certainly would have purchased a new Nissan when the time came...but now, no way! Fix the problem Nissan, stand behind your product!

Altima SE 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 89,450 miles

This car we had bought in May, and one week or so after, the engine started slipping when breaking or accelerating. However, when I took it to a mechanic and the problem was, the transmission only showed signs of acting up after about 15 to 20 minutes of driving, and then the problem occurred. The sad thing is this was such a great car, except for the transmission. When we got estimates, it will cost around $2500 to fix.
