CarComplaints.com Notes: You should probably steer clear of the 2012 Focus. Otherwise, you might not be able to steer at all.

The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.

And while you wait for your steering to disappear, you'll be greeted with a transmission that shudders, vibrates or won't shift at all.

While driving it in the downtown at a right turn after car came to a stop and I pushed the accelerator to move forward, the car started shaking badly and then the engine light came on, and zero power was transmitting to wheels. I could hear the engine running fine but seemed like transmission is dead. Tried switching it off and on and did not help at all. I asked a couple of men around to push it and pull it over unblocking the traffic.

It was like a nightmare happened to me in the downtown. It took 3 hours for Ford to get somebody to tow it to the dealer and I lost the whole Saturday afternoon stranded and waiting for them to tow it. They fixed it as I had a extended service plan , they told me they changed the transmission electronic module but I do not think this would be the last problem I'll have with the transmission as I had all the other problems (shuddering, jiggling, etc) with the transmission. It is not safe to drive it anymore.

I have a 2012 Ford Focus and had a complete transmission failure that cost $3700.00 for total replacement. I still continually have the shuddering of the new transmission as I did the old! Ridiculous for a car that is 2 years old.

Focus SEL 2.0L V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 59,000 miles

Went to three different dealers for the same issue. Complete transmission failure while driving each time. Once on highway with my 7 year old daughter in the car. Once on highway while in bad neighborhood part of Boston where a murder had occured earlier in the day. Once while driving in a small town, had to push to the side of the road with a line of cars behind me and almost hit by one swerving around me.

Ford customer service was abhorrently unhelpful. In fact the regional Boston customer service manager left me one voicemail, never called me back again tho I called her three times and left a long voicemail rant the last time. Ford's roadside service chose each time to use a towing company that was located over 1 hour away from where I needed to be towed resulting in a 1.5 hour wait time the first time, and over 2 hours the second time, where they "lost" my call and I had to call back 3x to even get towed away while stuck on an offramp.

This was my first brand new car. I have only purchased pre-owned in the past and never had this many issues. I'll never buy an American car again. Congratulations Ford you are living up to your name. I thought things had changed. Well shame on me for trying to support an American company thinking it would be as good or better than the competition.

This car is not that old so why I the transmission blowing. The rumors about Ford and their transmissions are real. I was stuck in a parking late at night because this vehicle would not start. This is my 2nd Ford. I will not be buying a 3rd.
