CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

The Airbag light was reported to Nissan Service department on 8/ 2020. Nissan want to charge $140 to run a diagnostic check. No warrantees covered it. The seat belt light came on and the RPM's dropped while driving 65 MPH during 7/2020.

I have a 2013 Nissan Altima 3.5L V6. Last year, I opened a case with Nissan to be told that there are no recalls other than reprogramming a module for my transmission and my passenger airbag intermittently not activating (which they did and didn't help either issue). My airbag still has the issue. I am taking it in for a transmission issue and if they don't fix it and the airbag issue this time, I will never buy another Nissan again and will warn everyone I know about their safety issues and CVT transmissions.

The guy calls me and tells me parts alone are $1400, cool. He says it wouldn't be covered in my warranty. Cool. I called my sales manager where I got the car and got my ESP on my PREMIUM SERVICE COVERAGE and sent it to the Service Advisor at the Nissan place, covered with $107 deductible. Make sure you have this covered under a service contract before paying out of pocket, a lot of vehicles have this recall on these year models because they get their products from one of two major manufacturing companies in the US. Make sure there isn't a recall first then make sure they aren't jipping you. Know your info before agreeing to this fix.

THIS IS A PAIN IN THE ASS . THEY WANTED TO CHARGE $125.00 TO DIAGNOSE EVEN WITH THE LIGHT ON. I CALLED NISSAN AND WAS TOLD THEY WERE GOING TO SEND IT TO SOME TEAM. I HAVE SEEN THERE IS A RECALL, BUT THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NONE.

Passenger airbag has been messed up ever since I purchased the car. The light comes on at all times. It doesn't matter if you are in the seat or not or if it is an adult or child. Took it back to dealer and they tell me it is fixed. Didn't get home till it happened again. I live 100 miles from dealer and can't run it in every time light comes on.

This 2013 Nissan Altima is a piece of junk. Had a 2001 that I kept for 9 years and it was great. Nissan is now using such cheap parts that I seriously doubt I will EVER own another Nissan. Nissan could care less about their customers once you but the car. Customer service seems to think every thing is a joke and all they offer are smarty pants comments. I don't used foul language but if I did, this would certainly be reason do do so.

Take my word for it and don't buy a Nissan.

The Nissan dealer tried 4 times to correct the problem, to no avail. Now we judge the car unsafe for a front seat passenger. The car is leased from Nissan. I want Nissan to take the car back with 10 months left on the lease with no penalty.

air bag light on

some time ago Nissan had a recalled (about 8 different recalls for this models so far) for the air bag sensor or switch. The issue was that it was not detecting correctly when there was an occupant in the passenger seat and it should turn the air bag off.

after Nissan supposedly fixed this POS car still the air bag indicator light comes on with my 20 year old son seating on it...

The dealer is full dumb asses in the service department so I have taking it back fro repairs

There already was a recall to fix this problem of the Passenger Airbag Off light being on when there was a passenger in the seat. We saw the problem before the recall was applied to our car. But since the recall, the car keeps doing this occasionally when my wife is sitting in the seat. Sometimes it stays on for a few minutes then turns off. Most times it does work like normal. But it's still randomly happening.

We have told the dealer on two occasions while getting oil changed. They didn't doubt it was happening but they said unless it happens while they are around they can't do anything about it. They believed it required an adjustment of the weight sensor.

I read here that there is a new opened NHTSA on this problem still being reported by owners of my car.

Have had this problem since the recall for the passenger airbag was corrected. Front passenger will be sitting in seat and airbag light will say "off", then sometimes it will go off, then come back on. This is a repeated problem that has been into the dealership 3 times and each time they say it is a problem others are having but it is ok and does not mean anything.

I purchased vehicle in 2013. Had recall and took to dealership and had the service performed, which was update. Still having issues with light saying the seat is unoccupied while passenger is seated and belted up. Called service dept. and explained still having the problem and was told still be having problems because my wife does not weigh over 125 lbs and not sitting properly in seat. This has not satisfied me. Had I known that this was going on I I would never of purchased this vehicle. I consider this to be a major safety concern

I'm taking my 2013 Altima in for the fourth time to service the passenger air bag light. The light frequently turns on (to say it's off) when an adult is sitting in the passenger seat. The service department has reset the air bag light/system three times. This is becoming a huge inconvienence to keep taking the car in every four months. I'm concerned the airbag won't deploy if needed or may deploy for no reason while driving down the road. Because of this issue and dim headlights we don't feel safe driving this car.

When the Passenger Seat is occupied the Passenger Air Bag Light is illuminated indicating the Air Bag is not activated. This issues has occurred since purchasing the vehicle. I have reported this to the dealership at the 3500 & 7500 service intervals. At the 3500 miles service the action was to verified that the sensor was properly calibrated & working properly and should not happen again. The next day the light again came on when my 138 lb son was riding.

Although this does not occur every single time a passenger is riding, it does occur frequently. At the 7500 mile service I again notified the dealership of the continuing issue. The issue was again verified that the system was working properly. The dealerships response was that the issue was related to using the specified components (seat cushion & sensors) that the NHTSA requires manufacturers to use, leading me to believe the issue is with government specs and not with Nissan. If so, the question then would be why doesn't this occur with every car that has an air bag in it's seat? This is the first car I have ever been in that has this issue. With exception that this same issue occurred when I rented a 2013/2014 Nissan Altima recently on a trip. Additionally when I asked, none of my friends or family have ever heard of such an issue. This issue is not resolved.

FROM THE TIME I GOT INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE SEAT IT WAS NOTED THE AIR BAG LIGHT INDICATED THAT THE AIR BAG WAS NOT WORKING. AFTER SEVERAL RETURN VISITS TO THE DEALER I REPORTED IT TO THE HOME OFFICE. AFTER ABOUT A MONTH AN EXPERT WAS SENT AND AFTER CHECKING IT TOLD ME THAT THE AIR BAG WOULD DEPLOY IF NECESSARY EVEN THOUGH THE INDICATIONS WERE THAT IT WOULD NOT . HAVING BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT WHICH TOTALED MY CAR AND BEING SAVED BY THE AIRBAGS I FELT THREATENED BY THE FACT THAT THEY WOULD NOT DEPLOY.

HE TOLD ME THAT SEAT BELTS SAVED LIVES, NOT AIR BAGS. I KNEW THEN THAT NOTHING WOULD BE DONE FOR ME. I REPORTED IT TO THE NHTSA AND THEN , AT A GREAT EXPENSE TO ME TRADED THE CAR IN FOR A TOYOTA . A VERY COSTLY SOLUTION TO A PROBLEM THAT COULD NOT BE RESOLVED BY ME NOR THE DEALERSHIP OR THE MANUFACTURER, NUFF SAID .BOO, THUMBS DOWN FOREVER TO NISSAN. BE FOREWARNED

poorest workmanship i have ever seen, piece of junk! Airbag warning light has been on since day one, back windshield makes it impossible to drive when frozen, large bolts on side of door and under steering wheel not covered, none of the windows have anything to help wipe moisture off the when they are rolled down, the mileage calculator doesn't work, had three recalls so far and returned to dealer, left with the same problems. No visibility out the windows or mirrors, I want to be notified of any class action lawsuits because this is my second new Nissan that was a chop shop car.
