CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

car dies when put into gear

I've had my car for 2 yrs now. I've had it to Nissan 3 times in 6 months because it had died on me once while at a stop sign. They couldn't find anything wrong. It would sputter and jerk felt like it was transmission. Each time they said they couldn't duplicate the problem. Most recent, it died on me at a stop light. It would start up but when put in gear; drive or reverse, car would die. They finally admit I need a new transmission. I think my extended warranty expired last month. They are saying if it did expire, I am responsible even though this is on ongoing issue way before warranty was up. Will never own another Nissan!

Altima S CVT transmission 49,000 miles

My transmission in my 2013 Altima goes and I'm no where near 60K miles warranty. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! Really NISSAN!!!!! ? A transmission goes on a new 2013 vehicle? May 2015 just makes a year of me having this car! Nissan claims that they fixed the CVT problem in older cars but based on some of the reviews I'm reading I think they still need to do some more fixing. Anyway, I'm going to be out well over $3500. There should no doubt be a class-action lawsuit out there waiting to happen, they know they need to recall these cars!!! Micheal Jordan, I hope you're reading all of these complaints Sir, This is NOT A GOOD LOOK. Never again Nissan!!!! This car issue almost caused me to nearly loose my life in traffic this past week. Car stalling with on-coming traffic coming my way!! Thank God the driver of a big Rig used his defensive driving skills to avoid hitting me!! To God be The Glory!!!

For the record, the problem was the car shutting off as soon as I put in Drive or Reverse. It would idle find in Park and Neutral, Very slow to take off and when if did go into drive it jerked really bad, as if the transmission was going to drop down out of it....SMH. And it took it's own sweet time to pick up speed to eventually go. My Family and Friends are highly upset!!! I called the Nissan Dealership and spoke to someone about this and I was told I'd have to bring it back to them to see what the problem is and it would cost me $130 just to look at it plus pay for the labor and repairs. What?!! And they are aware of these Founded Complaints already? I feel they should offer to buy it back or put me in a New Vehicle!! Somebody please help those of us who are having this problem , IT'S NOT FAIR NOR IS IT RIGHT THAT WE HAVE TO COME OUT OF OUR POCKETS, AND I'M HAVING TO RENT A CAR TO GET AROUND UNTIL THIS PROBLEM IS FIXED AT MY EXPENSE! YUP MY EXPENSE!!! THE DEVIL IS A LIE!!!

Toyota I'm coming to check out!!!

Update from Jul 4, 2015: Another crazy thing that struck me odd is that just a few days earlier I had taken my vehicle in for service and it's inspection and it passed!! Then just 4-5 days later here I am with this major problem. I'm really feeling some type of way and I just need to get this problem completely resolved ASAP!

Family member had same car but lives in different state, had a recall for the transmission. They got their car fixed at the dealership. I think it's unfair I'm having the same problem and we have no recall here

My transmission on my 2013 Altima goes soon after I surpass the 60K powertrain warranty. Really? A transmission goes on a new 2013 vehicle? Nissan claims that they fixed the CVT problem in older cars but based on some of the reviews I'm reading I think they still need to do some more fixing. Anyway, I'm out $3500. Hopefully, there a class-action lawsuit out there waiting to happen but I'm not holding my breath. All I can do is talk crap about Nissan until the day I die. Never again Nissan!!!! This car is a piece of sh*t.

For the record, the problem was the car shutting off as soon as I put in Drive or Reverse. It would idle find in Park and Neutral.

Altima SL 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission

I have leased from Nissan for the last 6 years and this 2013 Altima has to be the most disappointing car. Seriously looking forward to trading it back in, sooner than later!! The transmission repair was completed under warranty, but the car still has the vibrating, shuttering sound as before. It's noisy, so I tend to play the radio loud to block out the noise . Can you say LEMON!!!!!
